Currency & Costs
The currency is the Liberian dollar, Officially, the Liberian dollar is at par with the US$. However, in the thriving black-market in Monrovia, the US$ trades at a premium. There are no foreign currency regulations.
Liberia is an expensive country to travel in. Accommodation tariffs are considered extortionate, but you have no choice in the matter. Most of the hotels closed down in the civil war and are now gradually reopening and there is only a handful functioning so accommodation is at a premium.
To make an international phone call, you are usually required to put in a deposit. Car hire is more expensive if you want a self-drive one. Most of the travel agents and airlines and some of the hotels, restaurants and shopping establishments, accept major credit cards.
